Chapter 9 - THE RECORDING

The recording sounded like me.

That was the problem.

My voice said:

Nathan isn’t Lily’s father. He never was.

Victoria’s voice answered:

Then why are you here?

My voice:

Because I need the money.

Nathan listened without looking at me.

I felt physically ill.

“I never said that.”

Rebecca held up a hand.

“No conclusions.”

Daniel provided a thirty-seven-second audio file.

No original device.

No full conversation.

No metadata beyond a recent export.

Rebecca hired an audio forensic specialist.

While we waited, Nathan asked me one question.

“Did you ever talk to Victoria about money?”

“Yes.”

His face tightened.

“When?”

“Three months ago.”

“What did you say?”

“She accused me of staying because your household salary was better.”

“And?”

“I said, ‘Of course I need the money. I have a child.’”

That explained half the recording.

“What about paternity?”

“I once said, ‘Nathan isn’t Lily’s father to you, because you don’t get to decide that.’”

Nathan stared.

“You said that?”

“She kept asking questions.”

Two separate conversations.

Similar words.

Different context.

The forensic report arrived the next morning.

There were spectral discontinuities at three edit points.

Background refrigerator hum vanished between sentences.

My vocal cadence changed unnaturally.

The file had been assembled from separate recordings.

Not a sophisticated deepfake.

A cut-and-paste job.

Reward.

The recording was manipulated.

But where did Victoria obtain the original audio?

Nathan’s house had security cameras in exterior and common entry spaces.

Not the kitchen.

Not staff quarters.

Yet one audio segment contained the kitchen refrigerator.

Rebecca ordered a technical inspection.

A tiny microphone was found beneath a cabinet.

Another inside the laundry room vent.

Nathan went pale.

“Who installed these?”

The security company had no record.

I remembered Victoria’s interior designer overseeing renovations.

Invoices showed Daniel Hayes paid a contractor called Signal Ridge Technologies.

Signal Ridge specialized in surveillance equipment.

The same company had installed Victoria’s private office system.

The house had been bugged.

Not to protect Nathan.

To monitor me.

Then we found the information twist.

The microphones were installed seven months before I was hired.

Victoria had been recording Nathan too.

Hundreds of hours potentially existed.

Why?

Rebecca obtained the contractor agreement.

Client: Victoria Hayes.

Purpose:

Domestic litigation preparedness.

Seven months before her wedding.

Before any known dispute.

Before I entered the house.

Victoria had been preparing evidence against the man she planned to marry.

Nathan stared at the contract.

“This wasn’t just about Grace.”

No.

Lily threatened her plan.

But the plan had existed before Lily returned.

📖 The fake recording exposed hidden microphones throughout Nathan’s home, revealing Victoria had been secretly building a private archive against her own fiancé long before Grace arrived. 👇
