Chapter 26 - THE TRUTH UNDER OATH
My assault case reached a pretrial evidentiary hearing before the financial investigations concluded.
I testified.
I hated every minute.
Victoria’s attorney asked why I stole Nathan’s DNA.
“I used a discarded glass without his permission.”
“So you violated his privacy.”
“Yes.”
“Because you wanted money.”
“No.”
“You were paid more after entering his household.”
“I was paid my salary.”
“You knew he was wealthy.”
“Yes.”
“Yet you expect this court to believe wealth had no influence?”
I looked toward Lily’s empty seat.
We had kept her away.
“I expect the court to judge what I did, not pretend my mistake explains Victoria hitting me.”
Rebecca had told me not to fight every insult.
Answer the question.
Own what was mine.
Leave Victoria carrying what was hers.
Nathan testified about what he saw.
Helen testified that Victoria knew Lily and I would be alone.
Signal Ridge’s technician authenticated the kitchen recording.
Fulton authenticated the surveillance.
Daniel testified under a cooperation agreement that he told Victoria not to confront me.
Charles admitted approving the false settlement without sufficient verification.
No one looked heroic.
That was why the truth held.
Victoria testified against advice.
She cried.
She described years of loving Nathan.
Her father’s failing company.
The loans.
Her terror of losing everything.
She said she went to the kitchen to demand the envelope.
She admitted bringing the stick.
Then she claimed she only intended to scare me.
The prosecutor played the recording.
“You have to die to keep the secret!”
Victoria closed her eyes.
“Were those your words?”
“Yes.”
“Did you strike Grace?”
“Yes.”
One word.
Four months of denial collapsed.
“Did Grace attack you first?”
“No.”
Another.
Nathan lowered his head.
Victoria’s attorney tried to recover.
She was panicked.
Emotionally unstable.
Under financial pressure.
All possibly true.
None changed the strike.
Outside the criminal case, Daniel formally admitted creating the fake settlement and notarizing my forged signature.
He surrendered his law license pending disciplinary action and pleaded to fraud-related charges later resolved separately.
Charles admitted his control violations and false approval practices to Cole Meridian’s special committee.
He resigned permanently and agreed to financial penalties.
Helen entered a cooperation agreement related to evidence removal and returned the box intact.
Richard’s role remained narrower.
He had benefited from stolen loan proceeds and financed the false CPS campaign.
Investigators pursued those acts specifically.
No one invented a broader crime simply to make the ending cleaner.
The biggest financial evidence came last.
The lender completed its own forensic review and acknowledged Nathan’s share pledge had been unauthorized.
Its claim against Cole Meridian was withdrawn.
Claims shifted toward Hayes entities and individuals who submitted the false documents.
Nathan’s company control stabilized.
My paternity filing was finalized.
Nathan Cole became Lily’s legal father.
Not because of one envelope.
Because of a witnessed DNA test, consent, verified identity, court filing, and both parents agreeing to a parenting plan.
The sealed envelope that began everything remained in Rebecca’s evidence cabinet.
Legally weak.
Emotionally enormous.
Victoria saw a piece of paper that could lead Nathan toward the truth and chose violence.
That choice was finally hers alone.
The jury trial was still ahead when the final plea negotiations began.
Then Victoria made one last decision.
She stopped denying the assault.
Not the entire financial case.
Not every allegation.
But the kitchen.
She pleaded guilty to felony assault under an agreement requiring a custodial sentence and full no-contact protection for Lily and me.
The other investigations continued on their own evidence.
There would be no single courtroom sentence that magically explained four years.
