Chapter 11 - CHARLES’S SECRET

Charles did not deny it.

When Rebecca played the recording, his shoulders sagged.

“The Mercer account was my mistake.”

Nathan’s voice was flat.

“What mistake?”

Five years earlier, Charles had covered a temporary cash shortage inside Cole Meridian by moving four million dollars between restricted internal accounts without board approval.

The money was replaced within three weeks.

No investor lost money.

But the transfer violated corporate controls and could have ended his career.

Victoria discovered it during an internal audit.

“She threatened you,” Nathan said.

“Yes.”

“For four years?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because your father trusted me.”

“My father was dead.”

“I didn’t want his son to know I failed him.”

Nathan laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“So instead you failed me longer.”

Charles nodded.

That was the reward.

Victoria did not need Charles to be loyal.

She needed him ashamed.

Shame was cheaper than bribery.

Charles admitted approving the fake Grace settlement because Victoria framed it as protecting Nathan from scandal.

When he later grew suspicious, she used the old account violation to silence him.

But he had quietly preserved records.

Not out of courage.

Out of fear.

He kept copies of Daniel Hayes’s settlement instructions and Victoria’s payment requests on an encrypted drive outside the company.

Rebecca asked why.

“Insurance.”

Nathan looked disgusted.

“Against whom?”

“Everyone.”

That was the culture Victoria created.

No allies.

Only people holding weapons against each other.

Charles surrendered the drive.

It contained the original forged release before my signature had been added.

Daniel emailed Victoria:

Need signature sample.

Victoria replied with an attachment.

My employment-agency form from years earlier.

They had traced my signature from that.

Direct setup and payoff.

The drive also contained a payment to Fulton Risk marked:

Post-birth verification.

We already knew what that meant.

Then Rebecca found another folder.

V.H. financing.

Victoria had borrowed heavily against expected marital assets.

Before marrying Nathan.

Private lenders had extended nearly eight million dollars based on projected wealth and public association with him.

If the wedding collapsed, several loans could be called.

Financial desperation became concrete.

She was not merely jealous of me.

She was financially dependent on becoming Mrs. Nathan Cole.

Lily threatened the prenup.

The hidden recordings threatened Nathan’s trust.

Exposure of the forged settlement threatened Daniel’s law license and Victoria’s freedom.

The hockey-stick attack had erupted at the intersection of all three.

Then Charles revealed the bigger question.

“There’s one loan you haven’t seen.”

“How much?” Rebecca asked.

“Twelve million.”

Nathan stared.

“Secured by what?”

Charles swallowed.

“Shares Victoria doesn’t own.”

The room went silent.

“Whose shares?”

Charles looked at Nathan.

“Yours.”

Someone had pledged Nathan’s Cole Meridian shares as collateral using documents that appeared to carry his signature.
