Chapter 1 - The Cold Abandonment

I sat weakly on the cold hallway floorboards today.
My gray sweatshirt and sweatpants felt loose and heavy.
My pale face was completely drained of all strength.
My thirty-four-year-old body shivered from severe chronic illness.
My husband Jason pulled a heavy suitcase toward the door.
He wore a neat light blue shirt and khaki pants.
Outside the front windows, his wealthy family waited quietly.
His arrogant parents and younger sister stood near their car.
Jason turned around and looked down at my weak body.
"You'll be fine for a few weeks alone here."
Jason stated the cruel words with total, chilling indifference.
He walked outside and firmly shut the heavy oak door.
The brass deadbolt lock clicked shut from the outside.
I desperately crawled on my knees toward the hallway table.
I reached for my plastic weekly medication pill organizer box.
I opened the small compartments with trembling, numb fingers.
Every single plastic slot inside was completely empty today.
Panic seized my racing heart as cold sweat broke out.
"Jason... where is my life-saving daily medicine box?"

I cried out into the quiet, dark, empty house.
