Chapter 3 - The Firefighter Rescue

Hours passed like agonizing, terrifying years in total darkness.

I lay motionlessly on the cold kitchen tile floor.

My breathing came in shallow, slow, painful, raspy gasps.

Suddenly, a loud metallic impact shattered the quiet afternoon.

Heavy iron axes struck the locked rear kitchen door frame.

Wood splintered violently as the heavy door gave way fast.

Three firefighters in heavy gear rushed into the room.

A veteran firefighter knelt beside my weak, limp body.

He checked my weak pulse with his warm, gloved fingers.

"We've got her! She's alive in here, team!"

He shouted loudly to the paramedics waiting outside the house.

They carefully lifted my fragile frame onto a rolling stretcher.

They placed a clear plastic oxygen mask over my face.

As they wheeled me out into bright, blinding sunlight,

A concerned neighbor stood near the grass, crying softly.

She had called nine one one after noticing shut utilities.

The emergency ambulance sped away with sirens blaring loudly.

I closed my eyes, clinging to my fading life.
