Chapter 3 - THE FIRST DNA TEST

We spent the night in a secure hotel arranged by Detective Hayes.
Lily slept beside me with one hand tangled in my sleeve.
I did not sleep.
At dawn, Julian’s attorney arrived with a sealed DNA kit. Rebecca refused to let the Sterling family control collection or transport.
We used three independent laboratories.
One government lab.
One hospital lab outside New York.
One international genealogy center.
The first result returned within hours.
No relation to Julian Sterling.
Richard’s lawyer released it immediately.
He called my identity claim a publicity stunt created after the birthday incident.
The family court judge ordered a psychological evaluation.
Exactly as Julian warned.
The government lab then reported something strange.
The submitted sample labeled JULIAN STERLING did not belong to Julian.
Someone switched it.
Security footage showed the lab courier meeting Vanessa in a parking garage.
Richard’s mistress had replaced the sample.
Ashley-style filming was not her only role.
She worked for Olivia.
Hayes arrested her for evidence tampering.
Vanessa offered cooperation before the handcuffs closed.
She admitted Richard had promised to leave me and marry her after gaining control of the Sterling inheritance.
He never intended to marry her.
Olivia planned to blame the entire scheme on Vanessa if it failed.
Betrayal spread through the people who believed they were insiders.
The second DNA test arrived.
Julian was my maternal uncle.
Probability: 99.98 percent.
I was Madeline Sterling.
But identity did not feel like a fortune.
It felt like another person standing behind me, demanding I become her.
Lily touched the missing-child photograph.
“Is that you?”
“Yes.”
“Are you still Mommy?”
“Yes.”
That answer came easily.
Everything else did not.
Julian explained my mother, Catherine Sterling, died shortly after my disappearance. She spent her final months accusing her husband’s brother, Victor Sterling, of arranging the kidnapping.
Victor now controlled Sterling Holdings.
Julian held only a minority share.
If I returned, I could challenge Victor’s control.
Richard wanted my spousal rights.
Olivia wanted the trust.
Julian wanted justice for his sister.
Everyone wanted something from Madeline.
Only Lily wanted Maya.
The court hearing began by video.
Richard appeared bruised, claiming I attacked him after the cake incident. Vanessa’s full footage showed otherwise.
The judge watched Richard grab my hair and shove me into the cake.
Then watched me comfort Lily and leave without striking anyone.
The instability claim weakened.
Dr. Vale testified that I suffered “identity delusions.”
Rebecca asked whether he examined me.
“No.”
Whether he received money from Olivia.
He denied it.
Bank records showed six transfers.
The judge suspended his testimony and ordered an investigation.
Temporary custody remained with me.
Richard received no contact.
Then Victor Sterling contacted the court.
He accepted the DNA result.
Too quickly.
He welcomed me publicly and offered immediate protection at the Sterling estate.
Julian said not to go.
Rebecca said the offer might be a trap.
My phone received another message from the unknown woman.
VICTOR DID NOT KIDNAP YOU.
JULIAN DID.

The message included a photograph of young Julian carrying a sleeping six-year-old girl into Eleanor Sutton’s car.
My uncle had lied about the night I disappeared.
