Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN WITH MY FACE

The woman escaped before officers reached the parking lot.
She left behind a silver orchid ring identical to mine.
A note inside the band read:
MARGARET.
My twin was real.
And she had nearly killed Eleanor.
Or wanted us to believe she had.
The safe-deposit box contained Catherine’s will, a video cassette, and two trust certificates.
One named Madeline Sterling.
The other named Margaret Sterling.
Equal beneficiaries.
Victor had no permanent right to control Sterling Holdings if either daughter survived.
The video showed Catherine speaking days before my disappearance.
She named Victor as the person threatening her.
Then corrected herself.
“Victor is not acting alone. Julian believes he is protecting the girls. Eleanor believes hiding them is enough. The Vances believe every child can become a contract.”
Catherine looked exhausted.
“If my daughters watch this, trust no one who says blood gives them authority.”
The final minute had been erased.
Forensic recovery identified the person who stopped the tape.
Richard’s father.
The Vance family took possession of the video after Catherine died.
Olivia had known the will existed.
The birthday party was meant to make me flee with the ring while her men intercepted the suitcases and documents.
I disrupted the plan by sending evidence first.
Then Margaret contacted me directly.
Her voice sounded like mine with sharper edges.
She said Eleanor did not steal only me.
She stole the life meant for both sisters.
Margaret had been raised in private Sterling schools under Victor’s control. He told her Catherine chose Madeline and rejected her.
She grew up watching my life through investigators.
Waitress.
Marriage.
Child.
Abuse.
She believed I received freedom while she carried the family burden.
The truth was uglier.
Neither sister was free.
Margaret admitted entering the nursing-home control room.
She denied touching the oxygen.
She claimed she went to speak with Eleanor and found another woman already there wearing her face.
Sterling Continuity maintained trained doubles.
The same identity-replacement system that protected fortunes through false heirs and witnesses.
Victor could create a third “sister” whenever needed.
Margaret offered alliance.
I refused to make private deals.
She laughed.
“You sound like Catherine.”
“Did you know her?”
“She visited me once.”
Catherine had found Margaret before dying but could not remove her. Victor held Julian’s life as leverage.
Again, family love used as restraint.
Margaret gave us the location of the Continuity training center.
A mansion in Westchester.
Federal agents entered.
Inside were wigs, prosthetics, voice recordings, and reconstructed rooms from my life.
My restaurant.
My apartment.
Lily’s nursery.
The birthday backyard.
Actors had rehearsed the cake assault.
Richard’s line appeared in a script:
THAT’LL TEACH YOU TO EMBARRASS ME.
He had practiced humiliating me before the party.
The assault was not anger.
It was performance.
The training file listed the expected response.
MAYA SCREAMS. MAYA STRIKES RICHARD. MAYA FLEES EAST GATE.
I had done none of those things.
My calm broke the sequence.
Then agents found a final room.
May you like
A little girl in a purple princess dress slept inside.
She looked exactly like Lily.
