Chapter 4 - JULIAN’S PART IN MY DISAPPEARANCE

Julian admitted the photograph was real.

He was twenty years old when my mother begged him to move me before Victor’s men arrived. Catherine believed someone inside the family planned to use me to control the trust.

Julian placed me in Eleanor’s car.

He expected Eleanor to hide me for one night.

Instead, she vanished.

For years, he blamed himself.

But the photograph did not prove whether he helped save or steal me.

The unknown caller knew details beyond public records.

Detective Hayes traced her messages to a private nursing facility in Connecticut.

The patient was Eleanor Sutton.

Alive.

The woman who raised me had been declared dead twelve years earlier.

We traveled under federal protection.

Eleanor looked small in the hospital bed, but her eyes remained sharp.

She called me Madeline.

I asked her not to.

“Maya,” she corrected.

She said Catherine ordered the escape because Victor planned to declare her unstable and seize both child and trust. Julian helped, but Eleanor changed the route after discovering a second car following them.

She created a new identity for me.

Then kept me.

At first, because danger remained.

Later, because she loved me and feared losing me.

Protection became possession.

She admitted that.

“Did Richard know?”

“His father did.”

The Vance family worked as private fixers for Victor Sterling. Richard’s father helped create my false identity documents.

Years later, Olivia recognized me through the orchid necklace and guided Richard toward me.

The marriage was an acquisition plan begun before I met him.

Eleanor had tried to warn me.

Olivia intercepted the letters.

Then Eleanor revealed the unknown caller was not her.

Another woman knew the burial story.

My mother Catherine had given birth to twins.

Madeline and Margaret.

The second child was hidden from public records because the Sterling trust allowed only one primary heir.

Catherine feared the family would turn sisters into rivals.

One twin disappeared publicly.

The other was raised secretly by Victor.

The caller could be my twin sister.

Julian said no second infant existed.

Eleanor produced a hospital bracelet.

MARGARET STERLING.

Olivia Vance’s first name was Margaret.

I looked at Rebecca.

Could Olivia be my twin?

DNA testing answered.

Olivia was not my sister.

But she had used the hidden twin’s name for decades.

Why?

Because the real Margaret controlled a second branch of the Sterling trust.

Olivia impersonated her to access money and legal authority.

The real twin remained missing.

Then Eleanor handed me a key.

It opened a safe-deposit box in Manhattan.

Inside, she said, was Catherine’s original will and a video identifying the person who ordered my disappearance.

Before we left, the nursing-home alarm sounded.

Eleanor’s oxygen line had been disconnected remotely.

Dr. Reed restored it in time.

Someone tried to kill her while federal agents stood in the hallway.

The security system showed a nurse entering the control room.

Her face looked exactly like mine.

My twin had found us first.
