Chapter 8 - CATHERINE

Federal analysts confirmed the video was live.
Catherine had survived.
Victor kept her under guardianship for twenty-five years, declaring her dead publicly while using her biometric voice to manage the trust.
She looked medicated but aware.
The location appeared to be the original Sterling estate near Montauk.
Victor demanded both sisters arrive without law enforcement.
We refused.
Catherine spoke again.
“Do not trade the rings for me.”
That sentence changed the operation.
The threatened person had expressed a choice.
Agents built a rescue plan around it.
Margaret wanted to go anyway.
I did not trust her alone.
She did not trust me.
We agreed on one thing: no ring would enter the estate privately.
Forensic replicas were prepared.
The originals remained in federal custody.
Julian provided tunnel plans.
He had discovered them as a teenager.
Another secret he kept.
The estate raid began at dawn.
Victor appeared in the main hall holding Catherine’s wheelchair.
He expected two frightened daughters.
Instead, federal agents entered through three routes while Margaret and I appeared only on a secure screen.
Victor called us cowards.
Catherine said, “They learned.”
He tried to activate the biometric transfer.
The replica rings failed.
Accounts froze.
Agents rescued Catherine.
Victor escaped through a sea tunnel.
Julian pursued him against orders and disappeared.
The estate archive showed Catherine had remained mentally competent for years. She signed secret instructions preserving both daughters’ rights and documenting Victor’s crimes.
The erased final minute of her video named him clearly.
She had trusted Julian to release it.
He failed because Victor threatened Margaret.
Julian spent decades choosing between sisters rather than exposing the entire system.
Catherine did not forgive him automatically.
Then my mother met us.
Margaret stood across the room.
No embrace.
Catherine said both our names.
Madeline.
Margaret.
Then asked what we wanted to be called.
“Maya.”
“Margaret.”
The choice mattered.
Catherine explained the trust was designed equally because she feared rivalry. Victor altered the biometric system afterward.
The “primary heir” override was fraudulent.
No sister had legitimate authority over the other.
Then Catherine saw Lily.
She cried but did not reach without asking.
“May I say hello?”
Lily looked at me.
I nodded.
Catherine knelt slowly.
“My name is Catherine.”
Lily asked, “Are you Grandma?”
“I am Maya’s mother. You can decide what to call me later.”
The family system had never allowed later.
Everything had to be assigned immediately.
The word felt revolutionary.
Then federal divers found Julian’s coat near the tunnel.
No body.
A message arrived from Victor.
JULIAN CHOSE THE WRONG SISTER AGAIN.
The attached photograph showed Julian alive beside Vanessa.

Vanessa had escaped custody during transport.
Victor had collected the people most useful for destroying the case.
