Chapter 10 - Teresa Was Protecting the Wrong Son for the Wrong Reason
The former employee's complaint had been handled privately through counsel.
We did not need every detail to understand the financial trail.
Marcus had been accused of serious workplace misconduct involving a subordinate.
The matter ended in a confidential civil settlement.
Teresa funded part of it through her web of family entities.
That was the major twist.
For years, I assumed she protected Marcus because he was successful.
In reality, she protected the image of his success because admitting what he had done would expose how much of the family mythology was false.
Three earlier clues changed meaning.
Marcus's constant need for cash wasn't simply business instability.
Teresa's refusal to let Marcus fail wasn't about his employees.
And Richard's note about stopping the cycle after Marcus's mistakes suggested Marcus's problems had always extended beyond one failed property deal.
Julian read the available records twice.
Then he got up and walked outside.
I followed.
He stood beside his car.
“My whole life she told me I was the one she had to worry about.”
I said nothing.
“She used my debt to keep me ashamed while she covered things for him.”
“Yes.”
“And I did the same thing to you.”
I looked at him.
“What do you mean?”
“I made you responsible for solving problems you didn't create, then punished you when you stopped.”
That was the first time Julian described our marriage without blaming his mother.
Important.
Still not enough.
Inside, Marcus was furious.
“You had no right to dig into that.”
I answered:
“You used money connected to me.”
Teresa turned on me.
“This family existed before you.”
“And it will exist after me.”

Because for the first time she understood I might actually mean it.
