Chapter 6 - Richard Vance Left More Than His Sons Were Told

Julian grew up believing his father died nearly broke.
There was a mortgage.
Medical bills.
A struggling family business.
Teresa repeatedly described those years as a financial disaster.
The estate records told a different story.
Richard had owned a minority stake in an industrial property partnership.
After his death, the interest was sold.
Net proceeds exceeded $700,000.
Julian had never heard about it.
Neither had Marcus.
“Where did it go?” Julian asked.
Teresa folded her arms.
“I used it to stabilize this family.”
“That isn't an answer.”
“I paid debts.”
“Whose?”
Silence.
Marcus stared at her.
“Mine?”
“Some.”
Julian looked sick.
“Mine?”
“Yes.”
Then I asked the harder question.
“And the rest?”
Teresa looked at me.
“You don't get to audit my marriage.”
“I get to audit money that eventually crossed into my accounts.”
That landed.
David advised us not to turn the dining room into an improvised deposition.
We needed records.
Bank statements.
Estate documents.
Loan histories.
Everything traceable.
Teresa refused.
That was her right.
It was also information.
After Ellen and David left, I packed a bag.
Julian tried to stop me.
Not physically this time.
“Clara, don't leave.”
I looked at him.
“You hit me.”
His face broke.
“I know.”
“Your mother held my face against a table.”
“I know.”
“You broke my phone because you thought controlling me was easier than answering me.”
“I know.”
“And you still think tonight's biggest problem is that I might leave?”
He had no response.
I stayed at a hotel.
The next morning, Serena called.
“I found something you need to understand.”
“What?”
“Teresa wasn't hiding Richard's money from both sons equally.”
A large portion of it had gone to Marcus.

Much more than anyone had admitted.
And Julian had spent years being punished for a debt his brother helped create.
