Chapter 7 - Marcus Was Never the Successful Brother
The family story was simple.
Marcus was responsible.
Julian was emotional.
Marcus built companies.
Julian needed rescuing.
Teresa repeated it so often everyone eventually treated it as biography.
It wasn't true.
The failed commercial deal at the center of Julian's old debt had actually been Marcus's project.
Julian guaranteed the financing because Marcus couldn't qualify alone.
When the deal collapsed, Marcus protected his own business by allowing creditors to pursue Julian's guarantee.
Teresa then spent years covering payments.
But instead of forcing Marcus to repay his brother, she rewrote the story.
Julian had made a foolish investment.
Marcus had merely survived a bad market.
Why?
Because Marcus was Teresa's pride.
He resembled Richard.
Same manner.
Same business instincts.
Same need to win.
Julian had always been the softer son.
The one Teresa could pressure.
The one who would apologize first.
Suddenly my marriage looked different.
Julian wasn't simply loyal to his mother.
He had spent his adult life trying to earn his way out of being the disappointing son.
That explained him.
It did not excuse him.
I told him so when we met two days later.
“You learned to confuse obedience with love.”
He stared at his coffee.
“I hit you.”
“Yes.”
“I've never done that before.”
“I know.”
“Does that matter?”
“Yes.”
He looked up hopefully.
I finished.
“It matters because now I know you're capable of it.”
Hope disappeared.
Good.
I wasn't interested in making reality easier for him.
Then Julian handed me something.
His father's old notebook.
He had found it in a storage box Teresa asked him never to open.
Inside were handwritten entries about Marcus's failed project.
And one sentence beside a date eight years earlier:
Teresa promised me this stops with us. The boys cannot spend their lives paying for Marcus's mistakes.
Richard had known.
He wanted the pattern stopped.
Instead, after he died, Teresa intensified it.
