Chapter 3 - North Shore Heritage Group

The people at the door were not police officers.

That would have been too easy.

They were Ellen Walsh, our longtime CPA, and David Kline, an attorney specializing in closely held businesses and family assets.

I had asked them to come at eight-thirty.

Not because I expected violence.

Because I had planned to confront Julian about the account after dinner.

The family had simply accelerated the schedule.

Julian opened the door.

Ellen saw my mouth.

Her eyes dropped to the broken phone.

Then to the smashed dishes.

“Clara?”

“I'm all right.”

I wasn't.

But I was standing.

David looked toward Julian.

“We can reschedule.”

“No,” I said. “Come in.”

Teresa immediately stood.

“This is a private family dinner.”

David didn't react.

“I was invited by Clara, Mrs. Vance.”

That was when Teresa realized I had stopped treating financial abuse as a family disagreement.

Ellen opened her folder.

North Shore Heritage Group had been created six years earlier.

Its manager of record was Marcus.

Its mailing address belonged to Teresa.

But neither detail was the problem.

The company had received more than $420,000 over four years from accounts connected to Julian and me.

Some transfers were legitimate investments I had approved.

Others weren't.

My signature appeared on three authorization forms.

I had signed none of them.

Julian sat down.

“What are you saying?”

I watched him.

For the first time that evening, he looked honestly confused.

Teresa interrupted.

“Clara signs everything. She forgets half of it.”

Ellen slid one document across the table.

“No. She was in New York on the date this was signed in person in Wisconsin.”

Marcus stopped moving.

Serena looked down.

Julian stared at the page.

Then he looked at his mother.

“Mom?”

Teresa's jaw tightened.

And I understood something I hadn't expected.

Julian knew the family was taking advantage of me.

But he might not know how far Teresa had gone.

Then Marcus whispered:

“Don't drag Mom into this.”

David looked at him.

“She is already in it.”

And Serena finally spoke.

“No,” she said quietly.

Everyone turned toward her.

“She started it.”
