Chapter 12 - Teresa Finally Said What She Wanted

The confrontation happened in David's conference room.

No dining table.

No wine.

No audience to impress.

Teresa sat opposite me.

Marcus beside her.

Julian sat alone.

That placement said almost everything.

David asked Teresa why she forged or caused my signature to be used on transfer authorizations.

She resisted the wording.

Then admitted she had signed my name on one form.

“Why?”

“Because Clara would've said no.”

I almost laughed.

“Yes.”

Teresa looked directly at me.

“You always say no when the family needs something.”

“No. I started saying no when 'need' became whatever you wanted.”

Marcus interrupted.

“You don't understand loyalty.”

Serena, seated farther down the table in her professional capacity regarding records she could properly discuss, looked at him.

“You mean silence.”

Marcus glared.

Teresa finally lost control.

“I kept this family together!”

Julian spoke quietly.

“No. You kept us dependent.”

She turned toward him as if he'd slapped her.

Maybe in her world, he had.

“I saved you from bankruptcy.”

“You made sure I never forgot it.”

“I protected your brother.”

“You protected him from consequences.”

Then Teresa looked at me.

“And you took my son.”

There.

The real wound.

Not Marcus's company.

Not North Shore.

Not even money.

Control.

She believed Julian's independence was something I had taken from her.

“You never wanted me in this family,” I said.

“I wanted you to understand your place.”

“What place?”

Her eyes moved toward Julian.

“Beside him. Not above us.”

I finally understood why earning more money had always offended her.

My independence made hierarchy impossible.

And when I stopped financing the hierarchy, violence followed.
