Julian had been twenty-six when it started.
He and Marcus were trying to launch separate businesses at the same time.
Marcus needed capital.
Julian personally guaranteed part of a commercial loan.
The project failed.

He had never told me.
Teresa stepped in.
She refinanced her home.
Borrowed against retirement funds.
Moved money through North Shore.
For years, she had been quietly managing the consequences.
Then Julian married me.

“You knew she was using our accounts?” I asked.
He looked at the floor.
“I knew she moved money sometimes.”
“Without asking me?”
“I thought she was replacing it.”
“When?”
He couldn't answer.
The blood at the corner of my mouth suddenly felt like the least important injury in the room.
“For nine years, you let me believe every decision involving our money was ours.”
“I was trying to fix old problems.”
“You were hiding them.”
Teresa stepped between us.
“I saved him.”
“No,” I said. “You trained him to believe lying becomes noble if you call it protection.”
Her eyes narrowed.
Ellen turned another page.
Then she found something none of us expected.
A $96,000 transfer had entered North Shore two years earlier.
The originating account wasn't mine.
It wasn't Julian's.
It came from the estate of Teresa's late husband, Richard Vance.
Julian's father.
Richard had been dead for eight years.
That meant either the estate remained more complicated than Julian understood—
or someone had continued moving money that did not fully belong to Teresa.
Marcus sat down.
