Chapter 10 - The House She Wanted
The document was a copy of my grandmother’s trust.
The trust that owned the house.
Margaret had no legal claim to it.
Neither did Daniel.
But the papers on the video included something else.
A draft marital settlement agreement.
If I signed it, Daniel would receive temporary occupancy of the house while the divorce proceeded.
I laughed when my attorney explained it.
Not because it was funny.
Because Margaret had built an entire future around my panic.
First, convince Daniel Lily wasn’t his.
Then make me discover Emma.
Then push me toward an explosive divorce.
Then pressure me to sign documents while emotionally shattered.
My attorney looked at me.
“She underestimated you.”
“No.”
I stared at the frozen image of Margaret.
“She underestimated paperwork.”
Meanwhile, Lily’s new DNA results arrived.
I opened them with Daniel present.
Probability of paternity:
99.99%.
Daniel was Lily’s biological father.
He bent forward and started sobbing.
I didn’t comfort him.
The result proved my innocence.
It did not erase his deception.
Daniel had hidden Emma for four years.
He had allowed Margaret access to our daughter despite knowing she questioned Lily’s paternity.
And when I walked into that dining room, his first instinct had been to protect his mother from consequences.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
“I know.”
“Can we fix this?”
I looked at Lily sleeping against my chest.
“I don’t know.”
That answer devastated him.
But forgiveness was not the same thing as justice.
And justice came faster than Margaret expected.
The laboratory’s investigation found the identification attached to Lily’s supposed sample did not match the person from whom the sample had actually been collected.
Someone had manipulated the submission.
Then Rachel called me.
Not Daniel.
Me.
Her voice shook.
“Claire, I need to tell you what Margaret paid me to do.”
I turned on the recorder only after telling Rachel the call was being documented.
Then I said:
May you like
“I’m listening.”
👉 Rachel had helped Margaret manufacture the lie—but she was finally ready to explain what Margaret promised her in return.
