Chapter 2 - The Name She Called Him

The little girl pushed away from the table.

Her chair scraped softly across the floor.

Then she looked directly at my husband.

“Daddy?”

The room went dead silent.

I felt Lily’s fingers tighten around my jacket.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Margaret whispered, “Emma, sweetheart, stay there.”

Daddy.

One word.

That was all it took.

I looked at Daniel’s face and waited for him to laugh. Correct her. Tell me she was confused.

He did none of those things.

“Claire, I can explain.”

I almost laughed.

“Then explain.”

His eyes moved toward his mother.

That tiny glance told me more than his words did.

Margaret stepped forward.

“This is not the time.”

I turned on her.

“You dragged my starving daughter across the floor by her hair. You don’t get to decide what time it is.”

Her expression hardened.

“Lily is being dramatic.”

I looked down at the child shaking against me.

“She’s thirteen months old.”

Daniel moved closer.

“Claire, please. Emma shouldn’t hear this.”

Again.

Emma.

His concern was for Emma.

Not the baby trembling in my arms.

I stared at the little girl.

She looked frightened, but not confused. She knew Daniel. She knew Margaret.

And judging from the framed photograph she suddenly reached toward on the sideboard, she knew my house too.

“Grandma,” she whispered, “where’s my picture?”

Margaret moved too late.

I saw the empty rectangular patch in the dust.

Something had recently been removed.

My stomach twisted.

I had been gone for eleven days.

Daniel had told me his mother was staying with us to help with Lily while he worked.

Yet Emma clearly hadn’t arrived today.

She had belongings here.

She had a place at my table.

And someone had removed evidence of it before I came home.

Then I noticed the suitcase beside the entryway.

Not mine.

A small purple suitcase decorated with butterflies.

A luggage tag hung from the handle.

I stepped toward it.

Daniel blocked me.

“Claire.”

That was when I knew.

Whatever was inside that suitcase frightened my husband more than the word “Daddy.”

👉 I thought Emma calling Daniel “Daddy” was the betrayal—until I saw the name written on her suitcase.
