Chapter 8 - The Woman Behind Emma

Her name was Rachel Bennett.
Daniel finally told me.
Four years earlier, during a six-week separation Daniel and I had kept private, he had slept with her.
Once, according to him.
Emma was conceived during that separation.
It was still betrayal.
Because Daniel learned about the pregnancy after we reconciled—and hid it.
Rachel initially wanted no involvement from him beyond financial support.
Margaret disagreed.
“She wanted Emma in the family,” Daniel said.
“So your mother knew for four years?”
He nodded.
My throat tightened.
“And you let me sit across from her at Christmas dinners while both of you lied to my face?”
“I was afraid you’d leave.”
“You took away my right to choose.”
He had no answer.
Then I asked the question that mattered.
“Why is Emma here now?”
Daniel looked confused.
“Rachel asked me to keep her temporarily. She said she had to travel.”
“When?”
“Eight days ago.”
I stared at him.
“I was already gone.”
“Yes.”
“And you didn’t tell me?”
“I panicked.”
Of course he did.
Daniel’s entire life had become a monument to cowardice.
But something still didn’t fit.
Margaret’s recording said Rachel had “waited four years.”
That didn’t sound like a mother dropping off her child temporarily.
My attorney obtained permission from Daniel to review the messages Rachel had sent him.
Most were ordinary.
Then we found one Daniel claimed he had never seen.
It had been archived.
Rachel had written:
Your mother says Claire will be gone before she gets home. I need you to confirm that before I change my plans.
Daniel stared at the message.
“I never archived this.”
I looked at him.
“Who knows your phone passcode?”
His face slowly changed.
“My mother.”
Then another archived message appeared.
This one had been sent from Daniel’s account.
Don’t worry. Claire won’t be a problem much longer.
Daniel whispered, “I didn’t write that.”

For once, I believed him.
👉 Someone had been speaking to Emma’s mother as Daniel—and Margaret’s plan was much bigger than hiding an affair.
