Chapter 7 - Eleven Days

We watched the footage in my attorney’s office.

Not at home.

Not with Margaret nearby.

I wanted copies preserved before anyone could touch them.

The first recording made Daniel cry.

Margaret sat Emma at the table.

She placed food in front of her.

Then she put Lily in a high chair several feet away.

No plate.

No bottle.

Lily reached toward the table.

Margaret pushed her hand down.

The next clip was worse.

Lily cried while Margaret ate.

Daniel appeared briefly in the doorway.

My heart stopped.

But he was wearing his work jacket and talking on his phone.

Margaret immediately handed Lily a bottle.

Daniel kissed Lily’s forehead and left.

Seconds after the door closed, Margaret took the bottle away.

Daniel covered his mouth.

“Oh, God.”

I felt no sympathy for him.

Maybe he hadn’t known.

But he had left our daughter with a woman who openly despised me, while secretly bringing another child into our home.

Day after day, the pattern continued.

Food when Daniel was present.

Restriction when he wasn’t.

Insults Lily couldn’t understand.

Isolation.

Favoritism.

Then came the recording from the morning I returned.

Margaret was talking on the phone.

The audio was faint.

My attorney increased the volume.

Margaret’s voice became clear.

“Once Claire sees the DNA result, she’ll be gone.”

Daniel looked at me.

The recording continued.

“And when she’s out, Emma can finally have the family she should’ve had.”

My skin went cold.

This wasn’t cruelty born from anger.

It was a plan.

Then Margaret said something else.

“Her mother has waited four years. A few more days won’t matter.”

Daniel stood so quickly his chair struck the wall.

“Her mother?”

I stared at him.

“You told me Emma’s mother wasn’t involved.”

He looked genuinely terrified.

May you like

“She wasn’t supposed to be.”

👉 Margaret wasn’t merely protecting Daniel’s secret child—she was preparing to bring Emma’s mother into my home after forcing me out.
