Chapter 9 - Margaret’s Real Plan

Daniel confronted Margaret with his attorney present.

I watched remotely.

He placed printed copies of the messages on the table.

“Did you send these?”

Margaret barely glanced at them.

“You needed help.”

“You impersonated me.”

“I fixed what you were too weak to fix.”

Daniel stared at her.

“What exactly were you fixing?”

“Our family.”

Margaret’s voice remained perfectly calm.

She said Emma was a Morgan.

She said Emma deserved Daniel.

She said I had “taken” him away before Emma could have a proper family.

Then Daniel asked about Lily.

Margaret’s face hardened.

“That child was never yours.”

“You don’t know that.”

“I have the test.”

“A test Claire never authorized.”

Margaret stood.

“You’re choosing her again.”

There it was.

Not genetics.

Not morality.

Jealousy.

Control.

For years, Margaret had resented that Daniel built a life she couldn’t manage.

Emma gave her an opportunity.

If she could convince Daniel that Lily wasn’t his, then convince me that Daniel had chosen Emma and Rachel, she could destroy our marriage from both sides.

But Daniel asked one more question.

“Whose sample did you use?”

Margaret froze.

The silence lasted several seconds.

Then she said, “Ask Claire.”

Wrong answer.

Daniel leaned forward.

“I am asking you.”

Margaret walked out.

She still hadn’t confessed.

But she had made a mistake.

On the archived dining-room footage, we found her preparing the DNA package.

The camera couldn’t show the labels clearly.

But it showed someone standing beside her.

Rachel.

Emma’s mother had been inside my house weeks before Daniel claimed she arrived.

Rachel watched Margaret seal the envelope.

Then Margaret handed her cash.

Daniel stared at the screen.

“She told me they barely knew each other.”

I looked at him.

“They’ve both been lying to you.”

Then my attorney paused the footage.

On the table beside Margaret was another document.

Not a DNA report.

A property document.
