Chapter 13 - She Never Cared About DNA

Daniel stared at his mother.

“You don’t care?”

Margaret folded her hands.

“She has Claire’s blood.”

That was it.

Four years of lies.

A fraudulent test.

A starving baby.

A marriage ripped apart.

And underneath all of it was something painfully simple.

Margaret hated me.

She hated that Daniel had stopped depending on her after marrying me.

She hated that the house came from my family.

She hated that I made decisions without asking her permission.

Emma wasn’t the cause.

Emma was an opportunity.

Margaret looked at Daniel.

“Before Claire, you listened to me.”

Daniel’s face changed.

“I was twenty-nine.”

“You respected your mother.”

“No. I obeyed you.”

Margaret slammed her palm onto the table.

“I protected you!”

“You starved my daughter.”

The words echoed through the room.

Margaret flinched.

Daniel continued.

“You manipulated Emma. You lied to Rachel. You falsified evidence to make me believe my wife cheated.”

“I did what was necessary.”

“For what?”

Margaret’s eyes filled with tears.

“To get my son back.”

Daniel stood completely still.

Then he removed the key to Margaret’s house from his key ring and placed it on the table.

“You didn’t lose your son because of Claire.”

Margaret stared at the key.

“You lost me because of what you did.”

For the first time, she had nothing to say.

Daniel walked away.

When he told me later, I felt no victory.

Just exhaustion.

Margaret had finally lost the control she valued most.

But Daniel and I still had our own reckoning.

He came to my temporary apartment that evening.

He didn’t ask to come inside.

“I’ve arranged counseling,” he said.

“For yourself?”

He nodded.

“And I’ve started the legal process to establish everything properly with Emma.”

“Good.”

He looked at me.

“I want my marriage back.”

I studied the man I had loved for years.

Then I gave him the truth he had avoided giving me.

“You may not get it.”

His eyes filled.

“I know.”

That was the first honest answer he had given me without being cornered.

👉 Margaret’s lies were finally collapsing—but justice for Lily required me to make the hardest decision of all about Daniel.
