Chapter 5 - The Test I Never Took

“You believe I cheated?”
Daniel’s eyes filled with shame.
“I didn’t know what to believe.”
“You could have asked me.”
“I was scared.”
“So you watched your mother treat Lily like garbage instead?”
“I didn’t know she was doing this.”
That answer stopped me.
Daniel looked genuinely sick when he glanced at Lily.
Not innocent.
But surprised.
“How long has she been missing meals?”
Margaret immediately said, “She hasn’t.”
Emma looked down.
I noticed it.
“Emma?”
Margaret snapped, “Don’t.”
The little girl flinched.
That was enough.
I stopped questioning her.
This wasn’t her burden.
I called Lily’s pediatrician and said I was taking her to urgent care.
Daniel offered to drive.
“No.”
“Claire—”
“You stay away from us until I understand what happened.”
Margaret crossed her arms.
“And where exactly will you go?”
I looked at her.
“My house.”
Her expression changed.
For years, Margaret spoke about our home as though it belonged to Daniel’s family.
It didn’t.
My grandmother had left it to me before Daniel and I married.
I carried Lily upstairs, packed essentials, and came back down.
Daniel was waiting beside my suitcase.
He held an envelope.
“The DNA report.”
I took it without speaking.
The laboratory name was unfamiliar.
The report looked official.
Probability of paternity: 0%.
Then I saw something odd.
The sample collection date was three months earlier.
I had been home that entire week.
No doctor had swabbed Lily.
No nurse had visited.
I looked at Daniel.
“How did they collect her sample?”
His face went blank.
“My mother said she handled it.”
Margaret appeared in the doorway.
For the first time all afternoon, she looked afraid.
I folded the report and put it in my bag.
“Good.”
Daniel frowned.
“Good?”
“Yes.”
I looked directly at Margaret.

“Because now I know exactly where to start.”
👉 Margaret thought that DNA report had destroyed my marriage—but the collection date gave me the first proof that someone had lied.
