Chapter 3 - The Suitcase

“Move.”
Daniel didn’t.
So I shifted Lily onto my hip and walked around him.
Margaret grabbed the purple suitcase first.
“Leave the child’s things alone.”
I stared at her.
“Why?”
She had no answer.
I took the luggage tag between my fingers.
EMMA MORGAN.
My last name.
Daniel’s last name.
My pulse hammered in my ears.
“Why does she have our name?”
Daniel swallowed.
“Because she’s my daughter.”
There it was.
No thunder.
No screaming.
Just six words that destroyed my marriage.
I looked at Emma.
Four years old.
Daniel and I had been married for six.
“You cheated on me.”
“It wasn’t like that.”
“What exactly does adultery look like from where you’re standing?”
His face tightened.
Margaret stepped between us.
“Enough. Emma is innocent.”
“So is Lily.”
Margaret’s mouth closed.
That silence enraged me more than any insult.
I looked around the room again.
Emma had fresh food.
Lily had been crawling beneath a table for scraps.
“You knew?” I asked Margaret.
She lifted her chin.
“She’s my granddaughter.”
“So is the baby you just called trash.”
Something cold passed through her expression.
“She’s different.”
Daniel snapped, “Mom.”
Different.
I looked down at Lily.
That word stayed with me.
Not difficult.
Not spoiled.
Different.
I picked up my phone.
Daniel’s face changed immediately.
“Who are you calling?”
“My pediatrician first.”
“Claire, don’t overreact.”
I stared at him until he stepped back.
“After that, I’m calling someone who can explain why my daughter looks like she hasn’t eaten.”
Margaret laughed once.
“You’re going to destroy your family over a tantrum?”
“No.”
I kissed Lily’s damp forehead.
“I’m going to find out who already did.”
As I lifted my phone, Emma quietly spoke behind me.
“Grandma said Lily wasn’t supposed to eat our food.”
My hand stopped.
I turned.
May you like
Margaret’s face had gone completely white.
👉 Emma had just confirmed Lily’s hunger wasn’t an accident—but the reason Margaret gave her was even more disturbing.
