Chapter 12 - Her Last Accusation
Margaret told relatives I had attacked Emma.
Within hours, messages arrived.
How could you frighten a four-year-old?
Emma didn’t cause Daniel’s affair.
You should be ashamed.
I wanted to scream.
Instead, I saved everything.
Then Daniel did something he should have done years earlier.
He told the truth publicly to the family.
Not every private detail.
Just enough.
Emma was his daughter.
He had hidden her existence from me.
I had never harmed her.
Margaret had mistreated Lily.
The dining-room footage existed.
The false DNA report was being investigated.
And he—not I—was responsible for the deception that created the situation.
The messages stopped.
Some relatives apologized.
Others disappeared.
I didn’t care.
Then Emma herself became the reason Margaret’s final lie collapsed.
A child advocate interviewed her in an appropriate setting, away from all of us.
Emma described what she remembered.
I had hugged Lily.
I had slapped Margaret after Margaret reached toward Lily.
I had never touched Emma.
But Emma remembered something else.
“Grandma told me to cry if Claire asked about Daddy.”
That sentence crushed Daniel.
His mother had used both girls.
Lily as the unwanted child.
Emma as leverage.
The difference was only the role Margaret assigned them.
Rachel agreed that Emma needed distance from Margaret.
Daniel agreed too.
For once, everyone with legal responsibility for Emma put the child ahead of themselves.
Margaret was suddenly isolated.
No access to Lily.
No unsupervised access to Emma.
No control over Daniel’s phone.
No leverage over the house.
No fake DNA report left to hide behind.
But she still believed Daniel would eventually choose her.
Then came the family meeting she demanded.
Daniel almost refused.
I told him to go.
Not for reconciliation.
For closure.
Margaret sat at the head of her dining table as if she still controlled everyone around it.
Then Daniel placed the real DNA report in front of her.
“Lily is my daughter.”
Margaret didn’t even look down.
“I don’t care.”
