Chapter 14 - The Police Arrive

I called the police.
Thomas tried to leave before they arrived.
Marta stood in the doorway.
Not dramatically.
Not with threats.
She simply refused to move.
“You stay,” she said.
He laughed without humor.
“You think Sophie will protect you?”
Marta’s face changed.
“I’m not asking her to.”
Two officers entered the apartment.
I showed them the broken vase, the forged loan application, the messages about changing the locks, and the second phone.
They separated us.
Thomas claimed the loan application was a draft.
He claimed my signature came from an electronically signed template.
He claimed the messages were jokes.
The officer asked whether he intended to sell property titled solely to me.
Thomas said we were married.
The officer repeated the question.
He refused to answer.
Because the fraud crossed state lines and involved financial institutions, the case would not end in my kitchen.
But the officers removed him that evening after discovering an outstanding warrant related to a false business filing.
He looked at Marta while being escorted out.
“You did this.”

She did not answer.
For once, she allowed him to leave with his own consequence.
