Chapter 17 - Marta’s Statement
Marta agreed to cooperate with investigators.
Her attorney warned her that smashing the vase, entering with a key, and attempting to remove me could expose her to charges.
She did not ask for immunity first.
She asked whether the investors could recover their money.
That did not erase what she had done.
But it was the first sign she understood harm beyond Thomas.
She gave investigators every message.
Every document.
Every conversation she remembered.
She admitted helping him pressure me.
She admitted introducing investors.
She admitted repeating false claims about ownership.
Her statement included one painful sentence.
“I believed my son because his success mattered more to me than whether Sophie was telling the truth.”
Rachel read it aloud.
I sat quietly.
Marta did not ask me to forgive her.
She moved out of the house Thomas rented for her.
She sold jewelry.
