Chapter 28 - Thomas’s Letter From Prison

Two years into his sentence, Thomas wrote again.
This letter was different.
He did not mention Marta.
He did not mention Elise.
He did not blame my boundaries.
He wrote:
I told people I bought your apartment because I was ashamed that you had done something I had not. Every time someone praised me, I chose the praise over correcting the lie. Eventually, I believed I deserved the thing I was pretending to own.
He described the investor scheme.
The panic.
The plan to leave.
Then:
I used Mom’s belief in me as a tool. I used your trust as collateral. I understand now that I did not lose my home. I tried to take yours.
I read the letter twice.
I did not answer.
Recognition was not the same as repair.
But it was more honest than anything he said during our marriage.
I placed it in the property folder.
May you like
Not as a treasured memory.
As the final acknowledgment of ownership.
