Chapter 29 - The Key on the Counter

Five years after the vase broke, Marta visited my apartment again.

I invited her inside.

It was the first time since the confrontation.

She stood in the kitchen doorway.

Her eyes moved toward the counter.

The new vase held white flowers.

“You changed everything,” she said.

“Not everything.”

She noticed the key hook.

Only one key hung there.

Mine.

Marta carried no spare.

She did not ask for one.

We drank coffee.

She apologized once more, not because I required it, but because she said understanding had deepened.

“I thought giving Thomas everything proved I loved him,” she said. “It only taught him that other people should absorb his mistakes.”

I nodded.

“I thought keeping peace proved I loved him.”

“What did it teach him?”

“That silence could be mistaken for agreement.”

We sat in the kitchen where we once stood on opposite sides of a lie.

No shouting.

No broken ceramic.

No one claiming authority.

When she left, she paused at the door.

“Thank you for letting me visit.”

Visit.

Not return.

Not come home.

Visit.

May you like

The boundary remained visible.

That was why the relationship could exist.
