Chapter 22 - Marta Returns Alone

Marta returned three months later.

This time, she knocked.

She carried a new ceramic vase.

White with a narrow blue pattern.

I did not invite her inside immediately.

“I know this does not replace the other one,” she said.

“No.”

“I know an object is not an apology.”

“No.”

She held the vase with both hands.

“I am sorry I came into your home believing I had authority over you.”

That was more specific.

“I am sorry I broke your property.”

She continued.

“I am sorry I believed Thomas without asking for proof. And I am sorry I wanted his story to be true because it made him look successful.”

I studied her.

“You were willing to make me homeless.”

“Yes.”

“Because he asked.”

“Yes.”

“You called me a liar for years.”

“Yes.”

She did not defend herself.

That mattered.

I accepted the vase.

But I did not invite her inside.

Forgiveness, if it came, would not begin with immediate access.

She seemed to understand.

Before leaving, she handed me a sealed envelope.

Inside was a copy of her statement to investigators.

No hidden explanation.

No plea for sympathy.

Only the truth she was willing to place on record.
