Chapter 19 - Thomas’s First Offer
Thomas’s attorney contacted Rachel.
He offered to sign the divorce agreement and surrender any claim to the apartment if I asked prosecutors to support a reduced sentence.
I laughed when Rachel told me.
“He is offering me what was already mine.”
“Yes.”
“And asking me to trade justice for it.”
“Yes.”
We rejected the offer.
Thomas sent a letter.
Sophie,
I panicked because I felt shut out of our financial life.
That was his first sentence.
Not I’m sorry.
Not I lied.
I felt shut out.
Even in apology, he positioned himself as the injured party.
The letter continued.
Mom escalated things.
Elise manipulated me.
You never trusted me enough.
Three women.
Three excuses.
No responsibility.
I gave the letter to Rachel.
She asked whether I wanted it preserved as evidence.
“Yes.”
Then I went home and removed every photograph of Thomas from the apartment.
