Chapter 2 - The Folder Monica Never Expected To See

Dana carefully closed the first folder.

The room felt smaller.

Even the afternoon sunlight coming through the windows seemed different.

Monica crossed her arms.

“She’s trying to confuse you.”

Her voice was still confident.

But I noticed the change.

She wasn’t speaking to Dana anymore.

She was trying to convince herself.

Dana opened the second folder.

Inside were copies of medical records.

School reports.

Character statements.

Every piece of evidence showed the same thing.

A stable home.

A healthy child.

A mother who showed up.

Always.

Dana looked at me.

“Why were these not included in the original report?”

I answered calmly.

“Because they were never requested.”

Monica quickly interrupted.

“You see? She’s manipulating the process.”

I looked at her.

“No. I’m responding to it.”

That difference mattered.

Dana continued reading.

The second folder contained something else.

A timeline.

Dates.

Times.

Events.

Every moment Monica had claimed I was absent.

Every accusation she made.

Every story she told.

There was proof showing the opposite.

Eli looked up at me.

“Mommy, are they taking me?”

My chest tightened.

I knelt beside him.

“No one is taking you anywhere.”

It was a promise.

But I knew promises alone weren’t enough.

The third folder was the reason I had remained calm.

The reason I never argued.

The reason I let Monica speak first.

Dana opened it.

Her face changed immediately.

Inside were copies of messages.

Between Monica and someone else.

Messages discussing the CPS complaint before it was filed.

Monica stepped forward.

“Those don’t mean anything.”

Dana looked at her.

“They discuss the complaint before the investigation began.”

Silence.

My parents, who had been standing near the hallway, looked shocked.

They had believed Monica.

Until now.

My father whispered:

“Monica…”

She turned toward him.

“You don’t understand.”

But I did.

I understood everything.

This was never about Eli’s safety.

It was about control.

Dana placed the messages on the table.

“Who helped you prepare this report?”

Monica didn’t answer.

And that silence revealed the first crack.

Then Dana’s phone rang.

She answered.

Her expression changed.

“What?”

She listened.

Then looked directly at me.

“Commander Bennett…”

A pause.

“We found another piece of evidence.”

I waited.

“What kind?”

Dana looked toward Monica.
