Chapter 4 - The Spare Key That Opened The Door

The question stayed in the air.
Who had access to my home?
I already knew the answer.
But I didn’t want to believe it.
Dana looked at me carefully.
“Commander?”
I took a breath.
“My parents.”
My mother covered her mouth.
My father looked confused.
“We would never do that.”
I believed him.
At least I believed he thought that.
Then Dana checked the access records from my security system.
One entry appeared.
Three weeks earlier.
A spare key was used.
The person who entered?
Monica.
My mother.
She immediately shook her head.
“No.”
Dana turned the screen toward her.
“The system recorded it.”
Monica looked at the information.
Then she looked at me.
Her expression wasn’t anger anymore.
It was panic.
“You don’t understand.”
I almost smiled.
Everyone said that.
Everyone who got caught.
“I understand enough.”
She stepped closer.
“I was trying to help you.”
I stared at her.
“You filed a false CPS report against me.”
She lowered her voice.
“Because I knew something was wrong.”
“With what?”
She didn’t answer.
That was when I knew.
There was another reason.
Dana noticed too.
“What were you looking for inside Rachel’s home?”
Monica froze.
The silence was louder than any confession.
My father stepped forward.
“Monica?”
She looked at him.
Then at me.
“I found something.”
“What?”
Her hands started shaking.
“A document.”
My heart changed.
Because I knew exactly what document she meant.
The one I had hidden.
The one connected to Eli.
