Chapter 3 - The Photographs That Were Never Real

Dana placed her phone on the table.
“The photos in the report were submitted anonymously.”
I frowned.
“Anonymous?”
She nodded.
“That was already unusual.”
Monica remained quiet.
Too quiet.
I noticed.
Dana continued.
“The images appear to show neglect.”
Eli moved closer to me.
I felt his fear.
Not because he understood the investigation.
Because he understood people were talking about him.
I hated that.
Children should never feel like evidence.
Dana opened the digital copies.
The first photograph appeared.
A messy room.
The second.
A damaged toy.
The third.
A tired-looking child.
Monica looked at me.
“You see?”
She sounded relieved.
“I was protecting Eli.”
I looked at the images.
Then I looked at Dana.
“There’s something wrong.”
Dana studied my face.
“What?”
“The photographs.”
Monica smiled.
“Now you’re denying pictures?”
“No.”
I stepped closer.
“I’m questioning the details.”
Years in military investigations taught me something.
Evidence tells a story.
But sometimes someone writes the story first.
Dana zoomed in.
The timestamp.
The lighting.
The background.
Then she stopped.
“You’re right.”
Monica’s face changed.
Dana looked at her.
“These photos were taken in a different house.”
Nobody spoke.
My parents stared at Monica.
Eli held my hand.
And Monica finally lost her confidence.
“How would you know that?”
I answered before Dana could.
“Because that furniture was never in my home.”
The room went silent.
Monica looked away.
A small movement.
But enough.
Dana closed the laptop.
“Mrs. Bennett, I need to ask you something.”
I nodded.
“Who had access to your house?”
I looked around.
Then I remembered.
The spare key.
The one I gave years ago.
The one only family had.
My stomach tightened.
Because suddenly the question wasn’t who lied about me.
May you like
It was who entered my home.
