Chapter 7 - The Warning I Never Heard

The call changed everything.
Because the person knew details nobody outside my family should know.
Dana traced the number.
Nothing.
Burner phone.
Temporary account.
Carefully planned.
But the message remained.
Someone had warned me.
Someone knew this was coming.
I searched my old messages.
Then I found it.
A text from three weeks earlier.
I had ignored it.
“Check who benefits if you lose custody.”
At the time, I thought it was a threat.
Now I realized it was a warning.
Dana reviewed the message.
“This person may be trying to help.”
“Or manipulate me.”
She nodded.
“Both are possible.”
That was the reality.
Not everyone involved was simple.
Not every enemy looked like an enemy.
Then Monica finally admitted something.
She wasn’t the person who created the plan.
She was recruited.
“By who?”
She hesitated.
Then said:
“Someone who promised me Eli would be safe.”
I stared at her.
“You believed them?”
She looked ashamed.
“Yes.”
Dana asked:
“Who?”
Monica opened her mouth.
But before she answered, the front door opened.
Everyone turned.
A man stood there.
My former assistant.
The person connected to the investigation.
