Chapter 2 - THE AMBULANCE
The ambulance arrived under police escort.
Officer Reed kept Michael and Dr. Vale outside while paramedics entered through the secured side entrance. Olivia was placed on a stretcher. Emma refused to release her hand until the lead medic promised she could ride with them.
Michael demanded custody.
Reed refused.
Dr. Vale identified herself as the twins’ physician and attempted to override the transport destination.
The medic checked her credentials.
Her state license had been suspended six months earlier.
She knew the revocation had not yet appeared on every emergency database.
That meant she expected a rushed decision.
Officer Reed ordered her detained for questioning.
She did not resist.
She only said, “If Olivia reaches the wrong hospital, her organs will fail before midnight.”
The blue residue from the syringe cap tested positive for two compounds.
A powerful sedative.
And a synthetic marker used in pediatric transplant matching.
The dose had not only been intended to silence Olivia.
It was meant to trigger a measurable reaction in a child with a specific genetic trait.
The ambulance diverted to an independent children’s hospital.
Inside, Olivia’s blood pressure dropped.
Emma sat beside the stretcher gripping the rail.
“You can’t go to sleep,” she said.
Olivia’s eyes fluttered.
“Daddy said I had to.”
“No.”
Emma slapped the mattress with her palm.
“You don’t listen to him.”
The paramedic looked at Officer Reed.
The officer had ridden with them because Michael’s access to the station system suggested police records might already be compromised.
At the hospital, Dr. Sarah Jenkins took over.
She ordered toxicology, genetic screening, and complete imaging.
She asked Emma what happened.
Emma described dinner.
Michael placed a small white cup beside Olivia.
Dr. Vale watched through a video call.
Olivia refused.
Michael held her jaw.
Emma kicked him.
He locked Emma in the pantry.
By the time she escaped, Olivia could barely walk.
Emma found the empty syringe in the kitchen trash.
She stole it and led her sister three blocks through the rain to the station.
No adult helped.
A neighbor saw them and closed the curtains.
The toxicology panel showed Olivia had received similar doses before.
At least four.
The current dose triggered liver stress but had not caused permanent failure.
Dr. Jenkins stabilized her.
Then the genetic test returned.
Emma and Olivia were not identical twins.
They were not even full siblings.
They shared Michael as father.
Different mothers.
Same birth date.
Same hospital.
Someone had placed two unrelated infants together and raised them as twins.
The record listed their mother as Caroline Carter.
Caroline died during delivery.
No body was released.
Then Detective Lena Hayes arrived with a sealed case file.
Michael Carter had another daughter born the same night.
