Chapter 6 - SARAH’S PLAN
Sarah contacted Emma through a tablet hidden in her school backpack.
The tablet had been recording the Carter home for months.
Sarah knew Michael drugged Olivia.
She had collected evidence.
Why not leave sooner?
Michael controlled the money, medical records, and her family’s debt.
Dr. Vale controlled Lily.
Sarah believed exposing one part would cause Vale to move the child permanently.
So she waited.
Her waiting cost Olivia repeated doses.
She accepted that.
Then Sarah told Emma where to meet her.
A bus terminal outside the city.
Emma wanted to go.
“Lily’s alone.”
Officer Reed explained that going secretly might place all three children in danger.
Emma said, “Adults always say wait.”
She was right.
This time, officers showed her the plan and let her record a message.
“Lily, I’m not coming alone. But I am coming.”
The terminal was surrounded discreetly.
Sarah arrived holding Lily’s hand.
Lily looked like Emma around the eyes.
Sarah did not resist arrest.
She said she never planned to flee after Emma refused secrecy.
She wanted law enforcement forced to see Lily before Vale could hide her again.
Her method risked the child.
Her evidence mattered.
Lily entered protective care.
The three girls met under supervision.
They stared at one another.
Emma asked, “Are we sisters?”
The advocate answered, “You share a father. You have different mothers.”
Olivia said, “That still counts.”
Lily shrugged.
“I don’t know you.”
No one forced closeness.
Then Dr. Vale requested custody of Lily, claiming seven years of maternal attachment.
The court rejected automatic return but acknowledged the relationship existed.
Lily loved Vale despite the crimes.
Children do not stop attachment because adults discover evidence.
The case required protecting Lily without ordering her emotions.
Dr. Vale was detained.
Michael remained jailed.
Sarah faced charges related to kidnapping and concealment but cooperated.
Anna and Caroline entered recovery.
The three mothers met once.
No competition.
Only grief.
Each had lost a child and unknowingly lived near another.
Then toxicology experts found something else in Olivia’s blood.
A genetic editing agent.
The doses were not only testing response.
They were changing her immune system over time.
The Carter protocol intended to transform Subject B into a compatible donor for Emma.
Olivia was being altered to serve the sister she loved.
Emma overheard.
She looked at Olivia.
“Did they hurt you because of me?”
“No,” Officer Reed said.
“Because of them.”
The distinction mattered.
Then Emma’s own blood test showed previous tissue extraction.
Small amounts.
Repeated.
Michael had already been using her to treat another child.
