Chapter 3 - THE THIRD CRIB
Police searched the Carter home.
The girls’ bedroom contained two beds.
The basement contained a third crib.
Child-sized.
Dusty.
Still fitted with monitoring wires.
Behind it, officers found photographs of three newborn girls wearing identical hospital bracelets.
Emma.
Olivia.
And a child labeled SUBJECT C.
The third girl had a crescent birthmark near her left temple.
A current school photograph showed the same mark on an eight-year-old named Lily Vale.
Dr. Evelyn Vale’s daughter.
Vale had raised Subject C as her own.
Michael fathered all three children through different women selected for a genetic study.
The experiment compared immune response, neurological development, and drug tolerance across half siblings raised in different environments.
Emma and Olivia were raised together as “control twins.”
Lily was raised inside the medical branch.
Michael believed one of the three carried a rare regenerative marker inherited from his family.
The sedative dose activated that marker.
Whoever reacted survived future tissue extraction.
Whoever did not would be discarded from the program.
Olivia’s collapse meant she lacked the target response.
Emma had secretly swallowed part of an earlier dose weeks before and remained conscious.
Michael believed Emma was the responder.
That was why the syringe was prescribed under her name.
He dosed Olivia to confirm the difference.
Dr. Vale claimed the trial began legally.
Consent forms existed.
Each mother had signed.
Forensics showed the signatures were real but collected during labor under heavy medication.
A hand on paper.
No informed choice.
Officer Reed testified about Michael’s words at the station.
“Delete the search. Return my children.”
Ownership language.
Not concern.
Michael’s attorney argued panic.
The evidence disagreed.
Then Olivia woke fully.
She asked for Emma.
When the girls reunited, Olivia said she did not remember telling Emma they were not sisters.
The sedative caused confusion.
But the phrase came from somewhere.
Later, Emma admitted Michael had said it during dinner.
“He said only one of us was his real daughter.”
DNA showed both were his.
The cruelty had been designed to split them before the test.
Then police recovered a hidden camera from the kitchen.
The footage showed Michael dosing Olivia.
Dr. Vale watched remotely.
A third person stood outside frame.
A woman’s voice said:
“If Subject B fails, return her to the mother.”
Michael answered:
“Which mother?”
The woman laughed.
“The one who thinks she died.”
