Chapter 1 - The Parking Lot Where My Secret Broke

The man’s hand locked around my wrist before I even reached my car.
The wet asphalt reflected the Walmart lights above us as he pulled me backward with enough force to make my shoulder twist.
My shopping bags fell.
My keys nearly slipped from my fingers.
Four men surrounded me.
Four strangers who saw a tired Walmart employee leaving a late shift.
That was all they saw.
A blue vest.
Black work pants.
A cheap watch.
A woman who looked exhausted.
The man holding me smiled.
“You’re just a worn-out Walmart nobody—so entertain us.”
His friends laughed.
I looked around the parking lot.
Empty spaces.
Distant cars.
The glowing Walmart entrance behind them.
Nobody close enough to help.
For six years, I had worked hard to become invisible.
I wanted a quiet life.
A normal life.
No questions.
No attention.
No reminders of who I used to be.
But the problem with hiding who you are…
Is that sometimes people force you to remember.
The man tightened his grip.
He expected fear.
He expected me to beg.
Instead, my feet moved.
Automatically.
Balanced.
Prepared.
Something I spent years trying to forget returned instantly.
His smile faded slightly.
Because my body reacted before my mind did.
I trapped his wrist.
Turned.
Used his own momentum.
And suddenly the man who thought he was controlling me was dropping toward one knee.
His expression changed.
Confusion.
Pain.
Fear.
I heard the others stop laughing.
One rushed forward.
I shifted my weight.
A single movement.
A controlled strike.
He hit the pavement.
The other two froze.
I stood between them and my old Honda Civic, breathing harder than I wanted them to see.
Not because I was afraid of them.
Because I was afraid of how easily I remembered.
The third attacker stared at me.
“Who the hell are you?”
I didn’t answer.
Because I didn’t know how much longer I could keep pretending.
Then headlights flooded the parking lot.
A sheriff’s cruiser stopped beside the cart return.
The door opened.
The sheriff stepped out.
His eyes moved from the men on the ground…
To my wrist.
My sleeve had moved.
Just enough.
The small dark tattoo beneath my watch was visible.
His face changed.
Recognition.
Shock.
Fear.
I immediately pulled my sleeve down.
Too late.
The sheriff whispered:
“Mercer…”
My heart stopped.
Nobody had called me that in years.
He took one slow step closer.
“Where have you been hiding?”
The attackers looked between us.
Suddenly understanding.
They hadn’t attacked a tired Walmart worker.
They had found something they were never supposed to see.
The sheriff stared at my covered wrist.
Then lowered his voice.
May you like
“Do they know what happens when your name reaches the wrong people?”
