Chapter 4 - The Attack That Was Planned

The sheriff listened to the radio.
His expression changed.
That bothered me.
Because I knew that look.
Something worse had arrived.
“Where did they get your information?”
I asked.
He looked at the attackers.
“That’s what I’m trying to figure out.”
I watched them carefully.
They weren’t professionals.
They were hired muscle.
People who believed they were dangerous because nobody had challenged them.
But someone sent them.
Someone wanted to find me.
The sheriff searched the parking lot.
“Do you still have the same phone number?”
“No.”
“Same address?”
“No.”
“Same name?”
I hesitated.
That answer was enough.
He understood.
I had changed everything.
Except the one thing I couldn’t remove.
My identity.
The sheriff looked at my watch.
“You should have covered it better.”
I looked away.
“I thought nobody remembered.”
He shook his head.
“People remember legends.”
I hated that word.
Because legends weren’t people.
They didn’t have fear.
They didn’t have regrets.
They didn’t have nights where they wondered if disappearing was the only way to protect everyone.
Then my phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
One message.
A photo.
Me.
Standing in the Walmart parking lot.
Taken minutes earlier.
The sheriff saw it.
His face hardened.

“They’re closer than we thought.”
