Chapter 6 - The Name From My Past

The name hit harder than any punch.

A person I thought was finished.

A person connected to everything I ran from.

The sheriff watched my reaction.

He already knew.

“You knew this day would come.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

A pause.

“I hoped it wouldn’t.”

The attacker smiled.

He thought revealing the name gave him power.

He didn’t understand.

Some names don’t create fear.

They confirm your worst suspicion.

The sheriff moved the men away.

Then looked at me.

“Callie, you need protection.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“You’re still doing it.”

“Doing what?”

“Trying to handle everything alone.”

That angered me.

Because he was right.

But I had reasons.

Then another vehicle entered the parking lot.

Not police.

Not normal.

A black SUV.

The sheriff noticed immediately.

So did I.

The doors opened.

And someone stepped out.
