Chapter 5 - The Eyes Watching From The Dark

I looked around the parking lot.

Every vehicle.

Every shadow.

Every person walking near the entrance.

Everything felt different.

Because once you know someone is watching…

You stop feeling safe.

The sheriff asked for my phone.

I hesitated.

Then handed it over.

He checked the message.

“Encrypted.”

I looked at him.

“Can you trace it?”

“Not quickly.”

That answer bothered me.

Because I knew what it meant.

The person sending it knew what they were doing.

The sheriff looked at me.

“You need to tell me everything.”

I almost smiled.

Everyone always wanted the truth after it became dangerous.

Before?

Nobody wanted questions.

I looked at my Walmart vest.

Six years of pretending.

Six years of being ordinary.

Then I looked at the attackers.

“I left because people got hurt.”

The sheriff became serious.

“Who?”

I didn’t answer.

Because saying the name would make it real.

Then one of the attackers suddenly laughed.

“You really thought nobody would find you?”

The sheriff turned.

“Who sent you?”

The man smiled.

And said a name.

A name I hadn’t heard in six years.
