Chapter 1 - The Cold Humiliation

The icy strawberry milkshake splashed heavy over my hair.

Sweet pink liquid dripped steadily down my pale face.

Sticky milk soaked deeply into my gray flannel shirt.

The crowded small-town diner fell completely silent in seconds.

Sheriff Vance stood over my booth with a smile.

His tan uniform looked crisp under bright lunch lights.

His golden law enforcement badge glittered on his chest.

He slammed the empty glass onto our table hard.

The heavy glass clattered loudly against the wooden booth.

Vance sneered down at me with pure arrogant contempt.

He pointed his heavy finger directly at my face.

"Look at this trash," Sheriff Vance announced very loudly.

"He won't do a single thing about it."

The cruel words echoed across the silent dining room.

Local customers froze with their lunch forks mid-air today.

Nobody dared to challenge the powerful small-town lawman here.

My chest remained steady with slow and deliberate breaths.

I did not blink or show any sudden panic.

Years of military combat training kicked in right away.

I kept my eyes fixed straight on the table.

The pink milk pooled slowly on my lap fabric.

I felt the sweet liquid dripping off my chin.

Vance chuckled softly as he adjusted his gun belt.

He believed he had broken my spirit completely today.

He thought I was just another weak civilian victim.

He had no idea about my actual military background.

Sitting across from me was my cold wife Amelia.

Amelia wore an expensive cream sweater on her shoulders.

She looked at my soaked shirt with sheer disgust.

She did not offer me a single paper napkin.

She did not show any sympathy for my humiliation.

Instead, she let out a loud and sharp sigh.

She rolled her eyes in total annoyance and embarrassment.

"You're embarrassing me," Amelia snapped in a voice.

"Just sit there and keep your mouth shut now."

She grabbed her handbag and stood up abruptly now.

Her vinyl chair scraped loudly against the linoleum floor.

She stepped away from our booth without looking back.

She wanted to distance herself from my public shame.

I slowly lifted my trembling hand to my eyes.

I wiped the sticky pink milk from my vision.

My eyes locked onto Amelia's cold retreating back.

The pain of her betrayal cut deeper than milk.

Vance watched her walk away with a smug grin.

He turned back to face me with heavy shoulders.

He leaned over my table to loom over me.

"Your own wife thinks you are worthless," Vance mocked.

"You are nothing in this town, Logan," Vance spat.

I placed both hands flat against the wooden booth.

I slowly pushed my body upward into standing position.

My tall imposing frame towered over the arrogant sheriff.

My gray flannel shirt hung heavy with wet milk.

My face remained granite cold without any emotional weakness.

Vance took a quick half-step backward in sudden surprise.

He quickly recovered his posture and blocked the aisle.

He crossed his thick arms over his tan chest.

"Where do you think you are going?" Vance sneered.

I stepped forward until we were inches apart now.

I stared directly into his eyes without blinking once.

My calm demeanor radiated dangerous silent authority right now.
