Chapter 2 - The Silent Walkout

Sheriff Vance held his ground in the narrow aisle.

His chest pressed close against my wet flannel shirt.

He expected me to throw a desperate wild punch.

He wanted a reason to lock me in jail.

I did not give him that satisfaction today at all.

I maintained unflinching eye contact with the arrogant lawman.

My breathing remained quiet, controlled, and perfectly steady now.

I took one firm step sideways into open space.

Without touching the sheriff, I walked right past him.

My steady footsteps clicked firmly against the clean floor.

Every customer in the diner watched me in silence.

Their eyes followed my soaked gray flannel shirt closely.

Waitress Nora stood frozen near the front service counter.

Her hands locked tightly around a heavy coffee pot.

She slowly lowered the pot onto the metal counter.

Her face expressed deep shock and subtle hidden fear.

She knew the sheriff was a dangerous ruthless bully.

She had never seen anyone walk away from him.

Amelia stood near the cash register clutching her handbag.

Her face flushed red with intense, bitter social shame.

She glared at me as I walked toward exit.

"Where do you think you are going, Logan?" Amelia demanded.

"You are making a complete scene in front everyone!"

I ignored her shrill voice and kept walking forward.

Vance turned his body around with a red face.

"You do not walk away from me!" Vance shouted.

His voice echoed off the diner's front glass windows.

He reached for his heavy leather handcuff pouch quickly.

"I will lock you up for resisting an officer!"

I did not slow down my steady, measured pace.

My hand reached out for the brass door handle.

The heavy glass door opened into bright afternoon sunlight.

The cool autumn wind hit my wet milk-stained face.

I stepped out onto the concrete main street sidewalk.

The diner door swung shut behind my back slowly.

The muffled sounds of the restaurant faded away instantly.

I stood alone under the clear blue sky now.

Pink milkshake continued dripping off my flannel sleeve cuff.

I reached deep inside my pants pocket with speed.

My fingers closed around my heavy titanium mobile phone.

The device was an encrypted military-grade satellite phone unit.

It connected directly to top-secret defense communications networks.

Vance had no idea what kind of phone I held.

He thought I was calling a local towing truck.

He pushed the glass diner door open with force.
