Chapter 13 - The Diner's Secret
I stepped out of the black SUV onto court steps.
My gray flannel shirt was still stained with dried milk.
I did not change into a clean uniform today.
I wanted the world to see the shirt I wore.
I wanted them to see how arrogance tried to humiliate.
Reporters pressed against the metal police barricades frantically shouting questions.
"Commander Logan! How did you uncover the treason ring?"
"Is it true your own wife was involved in plot?"
I walked up the stone steps without answering questions.
I entered the cool marble lobby of federal courthouse.
General Miller was waiting for me inside the lobby.
He wore his full four-star dress uniform with medals.
He stepped forward and extended his right hand to me.
"Outstanding work, Commander Logan," General Miller said with pride.
"You brought down a national security threat single-handedly today."
I shook his hand firmly, keeping my posture rigid.
"I just completed my duty, General," I answered quietly.
"The men we lost three years ago have justice now."
In the side holding area, Amelia was being escorted.
She wore orange prison overalls, her hair messy and wild.
She saw me standing beside the four-star general now.
She saw the respectful salute General Miller gave to me.
Her jaw dropped in absolute, total disbelief and shock.
She finally realized the full extent of my actual status.
I was not a simple mechanic or a low-level soldier.
I was a decorated special operations commander answering to generals.
"Logan..." Amelia whispered through the iron bar cell door.
Tears streamed down her smudged face onto orange collar.
"I didn't know... I swear I didn't know who you were!"
"You didn't care who I was, Amelia," I replied.
"You only cared about money, power, and social standing."
"And that greed cost you everything you ever owned."
She fell to her knees behind iron bars, weeping hysterically.
The guards led her away down the dim hallway.
I turned back to General Miller, holding my tablet.
