Chapter 4 - The JAG Connection

Vance's hand stopped inches away from my wet shirt.
I did not flinch or back away from him.
My cold stare pinned him in place like steel.
"Touch me, and it becomes assault on an officer," I warned.
My voice carried a chilling, unyielding military authority now.
Vance hesitated for a second, his fingers twitching nervously.
The line clicked in my ear as the general answered.
"Commander Logan, this is General Miller at headquarters."
"We have your location locked via satellite GPS now."
"Report your situation immediately, Commander," Miller ordered firmly.
I kept my gaze fixed straight on Vance's face.
"I am being harassed by local county law enforcement."
"I am currently at four twelve Main Street diner."
"Sheriff is interfering with active federal audit duties here."
Sheriff Vance heard the words coming out my mouth.
His thick eyebrows pulled together in sudden confused frustration.
"What federal audit?" Vance spat out with suspicion.
"You are a nobody in a cheap flannel shirt!"
Amelia stepped off the porch onto the sidewalk pavement.
"Logan, stop making up crazy lies!" Amelia yelled.
"He is just an unemployed mechanic, Sheriff!" she lied.
She wanted the sheriff to drag me away fast.
She wanted to hide her own shameful family secrets.
I spoke clearly into the phone's secure microphone line.
"The subject is currently threatening physical force against me."
"I am reading his identification badge into record now."
I looked directly at the golden star on uniform.
The numbers four four eight two were engraved clearly.
"Badge number four four eight two, Sheriff Vance."
"County jurisdiction, Pine Ridge municipal sector four area."
"Logged and recorded," General Miller replied over the phone.
"Federal Marshals are en route to your position now."
"Estimated arrival time is under three minutes, Commander."
Sheriff Vance's face began losing its confident healthy color.
He heard the crisp military voice through my speakerphone.
He looked down at my encrypted titanium satellite device.
A small red warning light was flashing on top.
That light signaled active federal line recording in progress.
Vance swallowed hard, his throat moving nervously now.
