Chapter 11 - HARBOR GENETICS

Harbor Genetics had not tested Lily.
Not officially.
The laboratory director confirmed that the report Vanessa possessed did not match their current reporting format.
The case number belonged to another client.
The signature at the bottom was digitally copied.
Vanessa stared at the email.
“So the DNA result was fake.”
“Yes,” Rachel said.
That was a major payoff.
There was no verified DNA evidence linking Lily to Emily.
None.
Vanessa sat down.
For the first time since the pit, she looked genuinely lost.
“Then someone wanted me to believe it.”
“Exactly.”
I felt no satisfaction.
She had still chosen what to do with that belief.
But somebody had fed her a false result designed to inflame an already unstable suspicion.
Robert asked whether Harbor Genetics could identify who created it.
Not from the document alone.
But the director, Dr. Michael Grant, agreed to meet.
Charles Bennett joined us.
I had not seen him since this began.
He looked at Daniel with immediate suspicion.
“What have you dragged us into?”
Daniel laughed.
“For once, Dad, maybe ask what happened before deciding who caused it.”
Charles stared at him.
Then at me.
“Is Lily safe?”
“Yes.”
That was all I owed him.
Dr. Grant arrived with counsel.
He recognized the fake report instantly.
Then Daniel mentioned Jonathan.
Michael’s face changed.
Charles stood.
“No.”
“What?” I asked.
Charles looked furious.
“That has nothing to do with Lily.”
Michael said quietly, “It might.”
Charles turned on him.
“You promised.”
The room went still.
“Promised what?” Daniel asked.
Charles closed his eyes.
Thirty-eight years earlier, Charles and his late wife Margaret had lost their first infant son, Jonathan, after a complicated delivery.
Margaret became convinced the dead infant shown to her was not her baby.
Charles privately arranged genetic testing on retained pathology samples years later.
Harbor Genetics’ predecessor performed it.
“And?” Daniel whispered.
Michael looked at Charles.
Charles answered.
“The child was ours.”
So there had been no baby switch.
Another family myth built around grief.
But Michael wasn’t finished.
“The test also revealed something unexpected.”
Charles’s face hardened.
“Enough.”
Daniel stood.
“No. Not anymore.”
Michael explained that the sample confirmed maternity to Margaret.
Paternity to Charles had not been tested.
Charles stared at him.
“You told me it had.”
Michael shook his head.
“I told your attorney the sample was insufficient for the additional comparison.”
“Which attorney?” Rachel asked.
Michael hesitated.
“Samuel Mercer.”
Mercer.
The same surname as Susan Mercer, the clinic administrator connected to my forged cord-blood authorization.
My pulse jumped.
“Related?”
Michael nodded.
“Susan is Samuel’s daughter.”
The room changed.
Susan Mercer was no random clinic employee.
Her father had handled the Bennett family’s most private genetic dispute decades earlier.
And someone using her handwriting had arranged to preserve Lily’s cord blood.
Charles whispered, “Find Susan.”
Rachel looked at him.
“Why?”
Charles’s eyes moved toward Daniel.
May you like
“Because Samuel Mercer spent twenty years claiming the Bennett family owed him something.”
📖 Susan Mercer finally connected Lily’s forged medical paperwork to a decades-old Bennett dispute, and Charles could no longer keep the origin of that grievance buried. 👇
