Chapter 12 - WHAT CHARLES OWED

“Samuel Mercer tried to blackmail me.”

Charles said it without looking at Daniel.

Rachel immediately asked what he meant by blackmail.

Facts mattered.

According to Charles, Samuel had handled private legal work for the Bennett family after Jonathan’s death.

Years later, Samuel claimed he possessed evidence that Charles had concealed medical negligence at the hospital.

“What evidence?”

“None that I ever saw.”

“Then why pay him?”

Daniel’s head snapped toward his father.

“You paid him?”

Charles’s silence answered.

Three payments totaling $180,000.

Not hush money, according to Charles.

Settlement of disputed legal fees.

Samuel described them differently.

That ambiguity lasted for years.

Then Charles terminated him.

Samuel died five years ago.

Susan apparently inherited his files.

“Did she ever contact you?” I asked.

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Last year.”

My stomach tightened.

Before Lily’s birth.

Susan told Charles she had discovered records relating to Jonathan and wanted money to surrender them.

Charles refused.

“What did you do?”

“I told her through counsel to stop contacting me.”

“Did Daniel know?”

“No.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Of course not.”

Another secret.

Another father deciding silence was protection.

Then the custodian of Emily’s closed clinic records called Rachel.

Susan Mercer had worked there.

She had also been the administrator on duty when Emily delivered.

Now we had opportunity.

But motive remained unclear.

Why target Lily?

Why Claire?

Why Vanessa?

Why revive a baby-switch story?

We obtained Emily’s authorization to review her own records.

The records showed her daughter was born alive, developed respiratory distress, stabilized briefly, then deteriorated and died approximately seven hours later.

No transfer occurred.

Diane’s account matched.

The infant’s identity records remained consistent.

Emily’s daughter died.

Lily was not her.

That resolved the central biological suspicion surrounding Emily.

Vanessa cried when she heard.

Not because she had lost Lily.

Because she had to grieve her niece properly for the first time instead of chasing the fantasy that she survived.

I watched without comforting her.

Some grief belonged to the person who created the damage.

Then Emily agreed to an independently collected, legally documented kinship test if needed.

So did I.

So did Daniel.

Not because I doubted giving birth to Lily.

Because I wanted every manufactured ambiguity destroyed by verifiable evidence.

The tests would take time.

Meanwhile, Susan Mercer remained missing.

Her former address was vacant.

Then Charles received an email.

From Susan.

Subject:

YOU FINALLY ASKED THE RIGHT QUESTION.

The message contained no demand for money.

Only a photograph.

It showed a newborn infant wearing a BENNETT bracelet.

On the back someone had handwritten:

JONATHAN — 1988.

Daniel stared.

“That’s my brother?”

Charles went gray.

“No.”

“How can you know?”

Charles’s voice broke.

“Because that photograph was taken after Jonathan was already dead.”

The old Bennett baby-switch story had just reopened.

Not because Lily’s identity was uncertain.

May you like

Because someone had apparently fabricated evidence thirty-eight years earlier.

📖 Lily’s link to Emily was finally disproven, but Susan’s photograph revealed the deception began with Jonathan—and someone had preserved it for nearly four decades. 👇
