Chapter 18 - BEFORE LILY WAS BORN

The clinic computer was found in storage.

Nobody had wiped it.

Susan probably believed it had been destroyed when the clinic closed.

Forensic imaging took days.

I spent those days being Lily’s mother.

Breakfast.

Blocks.

Baths.

Tiny shoes.

Ordinary life became an act of resistance.

Then Rachel called.

“They found drafts.”

Susan had written the anonymous letter months before sending it.

Multiple versions.

The earliest was dated three weeks before Lily’s birth.

Before Emily’s baby died.

Before my delivery.

Before there was any plausible “switch” to investigate.

That proved something critical.

The baby-switch allegation had never begun as genuine suspicion.

Susan planned to manufacture it.

The drafts referenced two pregnancies:

EMILY B. — MERCER CLINIC.

CLAIRE B. — ST. MATTHEW.

She had identified both women because they were connected to the Bennett name and due within days of each other.

Then chance gave her the tragedy she needed.

Emily’s daughter died.

Susan used that death to build the story.

My stomach turned.

“She exploited a dead baby.”

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.”

The computer also contained the fake DNA template.

The Harbor Genetics logo.

The copied signature.

The false case number.

All created locally.

Vanessa’s preliminary “result” was fabricated before her samples were even submitted.

The swabs never mattered.

Susan knew what result Vanessa needed to see.

Then we found payment records.

Susan paid an online research service to obtain information about Vanessa, Daniel, Charles, and me.

She tracked Vanessa’s relationship with Daniel.

Our divorce.

Emily’s pregnancy.

Margaret’s death.

She built profiles.

Not because she knew us.

Because she needed pressure points.

Daniel stared at the files.

“She knew about the affair.”

“Yes.”

“Did she cause it?”

“No.”

That mattered to me.

Susan had exploited the affair.

She had not created Daniel’s betrayal.

I would not let him hide inside her manipulation.

He nodded as though he understood what I was thinking.

“I know.”

Good.

Then investigators found a draft message Susan never sent.

VANESSA WILL DO THE REST IF SHE BELIEVES THE CHILD IS EMILY’S.

My hands shook.

Susan had predicted Vanessa.

Her jealousy.

Her grief.

Her impulsiveness.

But Vanessa still made choices.

Nobody forced her to grab Lily.

Nobody forced her to put my child in that pit.

Manipulation explained the fuse.

Vanessa lit it.

Then the clinic computer produced one more file.

A photograph taken from a distance.

My house.

Timestamped the week before Lily was born.

A woman stood beside my mailbox.

Susan.

She had been physically watching us.

Daniel’s face hardened.

“We need to know whether she ever entered the house.”

Investigators checked.

No evidence.

Then I remembered something from that week.

A package.

A baby gift with no sender name.

Inside had been a pale pink blanket.

I still had it.

Folded in Lily’s keepsake box.

When I retrieved it, a small card fell from between the layers.

I had never noticed it.

One sentence.

EVERY BENNETT MOTHER LOSES SOMETHING.

For the first time, Susan’s threat was not historical.

It was personal.

And it had been inside my daughter’s room for fourteen months.

📖 Susan’s computer proved the baby-switch story was manufactured before Lily’s birth, but the hidden card showed her obsession had crossed into my home long before Vanessa acted. 👇
