Chapter 5 - THE DNA SWAB

I drove back to the estate the next morning without Lily.
Daniel came with me.
Rachel did too.
Vanessa opened the door before we knocked.
“You talked to Emily.”
It wasn’t a question.
I held her gaze.
“You lied about your sister being dead.”
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
“He wasn’t supposed to know.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“You staged your sister’s death?”
“No.”
“What would you call it?”
“Protection.”
That word again.
Everyone seemed to use it when they meant control.
I asked about the DNA swab.
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“What did you do with it?”
“Nothing yet.”
“Why was it beside the pit?”
She looked toward the backyard.
Then finally admitted the pit had been part of a landscaping project. Lily had wandered toward it while Vanessa was holding the swab.
I didn’t believe the word wandered.
“You told her to stay there.”
“She kept running from me.”
“She’s fourteen months old.”
“I needed the sample.”
“For what?”
“To compare her DNA with Emily’s.”
There was the answer.
Vanessa had not been trying to establish herself as Lily’s biological mother.
She wanted to establish Emily.
“Why tell Lily you were her birth mother?”
Vanessa looked ashamed.
“I didn’t.”
I showed her the video I had started recording immediately after rescuing Lily.
Lily’s voice was clear.
She said she's my birth mother.
Vanessa stared.
Then she whispered, “I told her Emily was her birth mother.”
My pulse jumped.
At fourteen months, Lily could easily have reduced or confused the sentence.
That was plausible.
It did not make Vanessa’s behavior acceptable.
“And kidnapping?”
“I said you took her home from the hospital without knowing.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“You told a toddler her mother kidnapped her?”
Vanessa’s eyes flashed.
“If there was a switch, that’s what happened.”
“No,” Rachel said.
Everyone looked at her.
“A hospital error is not kidnapping.”
Vanessa fell silent.
Language mattered.
So did intent.
I asked the central question.
“What evidence do you have that Lily is Emily’s child?”
Vanessa walked into her office and returned with a laboratory report.
Not a completed DNA test.
A preliminary kinship analysis from months earlier.
Sample A: Emily Bennett.
Sample B: unknown.
The report suggested a close biological relationship.
“Whose sample was B?”
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
“Lily’s.”
I nearly crossed the room.
“How did you get her DNA?”
“A cup.”
Daniel’s expression turned furious.
“You tested our daughter without telling us?”
“I needed answers.”
Rachel took a photograph of the report.
“Chain of custody?”
Vanessa looked confused.
“Excuse me?”
“Who collected the samples? Who verified identity? How were they submitted?”
Vanessa had no answer.
That made the test unreliable as proof.
But it was still a clue.
Then Daniel looked at the laboratory name.
“I know this place.”
I turned.
“How?”
His face darkened.
“My father used it.”
“For what?”
“Paternity testing.”
The room went silent.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“Who told you to send the samples there?”
Vanessa hesitated.
“My father.”
Not Charles Bennett.
Vanessa’s father.
Robert Hale.

And suddenly the mystery expanded beyond two sisters.
📖 Vanessa’s secret DNA test was too weak to prove a baby switch, but Robert Hale’s involvement showed the claim had been cultivated long before Lily entered that pit. 👇
