Chapter 9 - BEFORE THE DIVORCE

“Were you sleeping with Vanessa while we were married?”

Daniel didn’t answer quickly enough.

That was my answer.

I stood.

Rachel said my name softly.

I ignored her.

“How long?”

Daniel looked sick.

“One time.”

Vanessa laughed.

I turned toward her.

“What?”

“One time?”

Daniel snapped, “Vanessa.”

She folded her arms.

“You want truth now, Daniel? Give her truth.”

My hands went cold.

Vanessa said their affair began four months before our separation.

Not six months after it.

Four months before.

Daniel had lied for years.

The mystery around Lily did not erase ordinary betrayal.

It exposed it.

“Claire—”

“Don’t.”

I remembered nights Daniel came home late.

The sudden password changes.

His insistence that work was consuming him.

I had blamed myself for becoming suspicious.

Apparently I had been right about more than I knew.

Vanessa’s eyes glittered with something ugly.

“You always thought you were the perfect wife.”

I stared at her.

“No. I thought my husband wasn’t sleeping with you.”

She looked away first.

Then Thomas spoke from the video screen.

“That’s why Vanessa planted the bracelet.”

Everyone turned.

Thomas said Vanessa had kept Emily’s baby bracelet after the clinic tragedy.

When Daniel refused to leave me immediately, Vanessa became furious.

She put the bracelet in his study beside our ultrasound photograph.

Not to create a baby-switch conspiracy.

To frighten him.

A cruel private message about family.

Vanessa whispered, “I was angry.”

“You were disturbed,” Diane said.

That landed harder.

Daniel sat down.

“So the nurse never called?”

I looked at him.

“You invented that?”

“No.”

Another twist.

A nurse had called.

But not about finding a bracelet.

She contacted Daniel because someone had called St. Matthew before Lily’s birth asking whether a Bennett infant was expected.

“Who?”

“They wouldn’t tell me.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“It wasn’t me.”

For once, Thomas supported her.

“Vanessa was with me when that call was supposedly made.”

Daniel had never followed up because he feared exposing the affair and Vanessa’s bizarre bracelet stunt.

His cowardice allowed unrelated facts to fuse into one enormous lie.

I wanted to hate him for the mystery.

Instead I hated him for something simpler.

He had chosen himself over truth.

Again and again.

Then Rachel redirected us.

“The affair matters personally. The pre-birth call matters to the identity question.”

She was right.

I forced myself back to Lily.

Who called the hospital before her birth?

Records from fourteen months ago might not exist, but St. Matthew agreed to review archived security and telephone documentation if properly requested.

Meanwhile, my delivery records arrived electronically.

I opened them with shaking hands.

My pregnancy.

My labor.

My blood type.

Lily’s birth weight.

Her newborn screening.

Everything looked normal.

Then Rachel found one notation.

CORD BLOOD SAMPLE — RETAINED PER MATERNAL REQUEST.

I stared.

“I never requested that.”

Daniel looked at me.

“Neither did I.”

The sample had been sent to a private storage service.

A company neither of us recognized.

The authorization carried my signature.

It looked perfect.

But I had never signed it.

📖 Vanessa’s affair explained years of deception, but a forged authorization on Lily’s actual birth record proved someone else had interfered with my delivery for reasons we still didn’t understand. 👇
